As our offices close today in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., we recognize his timeless views on health and wellness. While he didn’t speak extensively about health as some of our contemporary public health figures might, his speeches, writings, and actions show a clear understanding of the connections between social justice, economic inequality, and health.

In terms of health, Dr. King believed:

💟 That Health is a Fundamental Human Right:
He believed that access to basic needs like food, shelter, and healthcare was essential for a just society, and argued that if people’s basic human needs are not met, their ability to live a healthy life is severely restricted. In his "I Have a Dream" speech, Dr. King envisioned a world where people, regardless of their race or economic status, could live with dignity and equal access to opportunities, which certainly includes access to healthcare.

💟 In the Connection Between Mental and Physical Health:
He acknowledged the impact of racial discrimination, segregation, and violence on the mental and emotional well-being of African Americans. The psychological toll of systemic racism—such as the trauma experienced from constant threats to one's safety, dignity, and freedom—was a central concern for him. His vision of health extended beyond the body to encompass emotional, spiritual, and mental well-being. Dr. King believed that true health could not be achieved unless individuals were free from the burdens of oppression and fear.

💟 In the Power of Nonviolent Resistance:
Dr. King was also deeply influenced by the idea of healing through nonviolence. He believed that peace, reconciliation, and justice were key to the emotional and spiritual well-being of individuals and communities. His philosophy of nonviolent resistance was not only a political strategy but also a means of healing collective wounds caused by violence and oppression.
