A Stop In Social Media

June 29, 2018 | Isa Luzarraga

Social media is composed of very intricate and intelligent things. Using it, allows us to connect with others in way that have never existed before. Posting pictures or tweeting can provide us with a sense of enjoyment we’ve never quite felt before, as well as allow us to stay connected with people we don’t get to see everyday. But as more and more research is being put together, it is becoming more clear that these media platforms can isolate us more than connect us. It is important to be careful when indulging in too much social media.

There is an evident problem in today’s society seeing our younger generations communicate. An article from USAToday, published in 2012 states, “One in four people spend more time socializing online than in person.” This issue becomes more prominent when many are uncomfortable speaking face to face with others. Studies show that an increased amount of time spent on social media is linked with increased rates of depression as well. Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook inform you of all the things that you are missing out on. So how can you prevent this from happening to you?

Sometimes it is detrimental to take a break from all of the likes and comments. At first, it doesn’t have to be for an extended period of time. It could be just for a day. Try to stay off your phone and computer as much as you possibly can. Instead of going on your devices: read a book, take a walk, garden outside, cook a nice meal for yourself and others. Admire your surroundings, and take a moment to breathe. Remember that your life and other people’s don’t revolve around social media.
