Part Three

“Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes… including you.” Anne Lamott

Last time we met, I was in the middle of my annual February Facebook Fast.  During it, I was more relaxed and focused. I had more time and gave the people around me more attention. When I checked back in with Facebook, it felt chaotic, distracting and overwhelming. I can’t look at it now for more than a few minutes at a time.

The calm I felt without it gave me the idea to unplug completely. I’ve been contemplating attending a 3-day silent retreat for over a year now. But, let’s face it, they’re expensive and other people are there.
Alternatively, I’m taking a solo retreat to a treetop cabin at a nearby State Park for two days. I’m leaving electronic devices, the pressures of everyday life, and my to-do list at home. I am taking books, my journal, great food, a camera, and hiking clothes.

My hope is to come back with a renewed appreciation for and friendliness toward myself and others. My objective is to clear the feelings of chaos and overwhelm altogether; evaluate my priorities and make sure they match my values. All of this, to live a life 80-year-old me will be proud to have lived when she looks back someday.

Spring is the perfect time to pause and “drop in” to your life. Is there a place you can go – even for an afternoon or overnight – to unplug, recharge and find your exquisite rhythm?
